But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” Matthew 26:32
“Don’t be alarmed,” (the angel) said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! …He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”
Then Jesus said to (Magdalene), “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” Matthew 28:10
Last time we saw what did Jesus’ leadership team did with Magdalene’s startling announcement that she had seen the risen Lord Jesus: They immediately did … Nothing. But here’s the really strange thing:
Both the angels and Jesus had sent messages to the disciples through Magdalene to meet Jesus in GALILEE. Jesus had told him so, himself a few days earlier. So where were all of them the night following the resurrection? Still in Jerusalem.
These guys don’t seem very anxious to see the risen Jesus, do they? Roughly 15 hours after the first report of His resurrection—after He’d sent word to meet him in Galilee— they hadn’t taken the first step to get to there.
… Someone who was their closest friend
… Someone who regularly performed miracles
… Someone who had repeatedly told them He would rise from the dead on the third day
… Someone who reportedly rose from the dead
Nearly a day later and they haven’t made a move to go meet Jesus where He said they would see Him!
Reason: Seeing the Risen Jesus wasn’t very important to them.
Reason: They didn’t believe the report. They might have believed it in the general sense, but they didn’t believe it in a way that brought about a change in their hearts.
If you raced into my office and told me that one of our presidential candidates was in our lobby, I might not believe you. I might believe you but simply have no interest: “That’s nice, take a picture for me.” But if I was passionate about that candidate, I probably would drop what I was doing and take the shortest route to the lobby. Even if I wasn’t fully convinced you were right. See what I mean?
The New Testament gives us no record of even one of them saying, “Well, guys, you can sit around here if you want. I’m going to find Jesus.”
Which brings us back to the question we asked at the beginning: Why did Jesus choose to reveal Himself, alive from the dead, to Magdalene first. Reason: Because she was there…and she was passionate to see Him.
Are we more like Magdalene or more like the disciples?
