Understand what the Lord’s will is: Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Singing and making music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:17-21
The result of the continual presence of God in our lives (what we’ve been calling Remaining Glory) is that it makes us different people. It is not the other way around. I want to look at a few areas in which the growing presence of God in our lives changes us as believers: Here are 3 areas we will look at; as the presence of God fills us day by day:
1) God is worshipped
2) The Word of God is revered
3) The characteristics of God are manifested in our lives
First, God is worshipped: Which comes first, the Chicken or the egg? Do worshippers draw near to God or do people who draw near to God automatically become worshippers? Both are true.
In today’s verses Paul tells that “the will of God” for each of us is “Be filled with the Spirit”. Two examples are given to show us what God’s will is. The fist one is negative: “Do not get drunk”. Why? Because it leads to a lifestyle that is ungodly, is painful, it ruins us, and it hurts God’s reputation.
There is a better way to live and Paul turns to that in example number 2: Be filled with the Spirit. What’s that mean? How does Paul describe what being filled with the Spirit means? Just this: Speaking, Singing, Thanking, Submitting. Each participle describes the verb “be filled”. Each directly relate to worship.
1st: Speaking in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs: Corporate Worship
2nd Singing and making melody in our hearts to God: Private Worship
3rd Giving thanks to God: Experiential Worship
4th Submitting out of reverence for Christ: Lifestyle Worship
Whether privately in devotions or in a public setting such as family worship or local church worship, or when we are reacting to a difficult situation and under your breath our we’re thanking God – we are worshipping in those settings. When we treat our brothers and sister in the Lord right we are revering or worshiping Jesus through our lifestyle.
The Ephesians passage goes on to talk all about relationships in the Body of Christ. Relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, employers and employees
There is even an element of Worship in how we deal with each relationship we have. As we treat people in our lives as we know Jesus wants them treated we bless God (Matt 25:40). When you and I treat people (especially God’s people) in ways that Jesus wouldn’t treat them, we are sinning not just against them, but against God. (Matt 25:45)
Jesus told us “What ever you do to the least of these my brethren (good or bad), you’ve done it unto Me.”
