Album Review: “Healing Rain” by Michael W. Smith

Posted in Product Reviews | April 29th, 2016 | by

Healing Rain by Michael W. Smith is one of my favorite MWS albums.  I love the passion and worship that runs its way through the song.  Healing Rain is a beautiful expression of Michael’s heart that can help other Christians draw closer to God.

Quick Stats

Pros: It’s quite different from Michael W. Smith’s other albums with a slightly different sound

Cons: It’s not quite as ‘vertical worship’ as some of Michael W. Smith’s albums.

A Little About the Album: Healing Rain comes from Reunion Records, through whom Michael has been releasing records since 1983, when he released his first album, The Michael W. Smith Project.  The album (Healing Rain) was nominated for a Dove Award and the title track nominated for three Dove Awards.  Track 9 is a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s famous song, Bridge Over Troubled Waters.

Themes: Healing Rain is an expression of love for God with themes of worship and encouragement strewn throughout.

Style: Healing Rain is more rock than many of Michael’s albums, but there are several softer, more worshipful songs as well.

Transfer to Worship Service: Most of the songs wouldn’t transfer to worship service very well.  A few of them, including All I Want, Here I Am, and Healing Rain, are good for worship, but most of the others are better for listening.

Chord Availability: Most of the chords for songs on Healing Rain are available on the Internet on websites like Ultimate Guitar, e-chords, and others.  Unfortunately, there are no ‘official chords’ on Michael’s website.

Tracklist/My Thoughts

  1. Here I Am—One of the more worshipful songs on the record, Here I Am is a heart-cry for God to take me and let me serve all the days of my life. Here I am / ready to give up my life for the One / here I am / ready to pour out my heart for the Son / here I am.
  2. Healing Rain—This one is a favorite from the album. We desire for God’s healing rain to fall on us and heal us from everything that plagues us.  Healing rain / it comes with fire / So let it fall / and take us higher / Healing rain / I’m not afraid / To be washed in Heaven’s rain
  3. Live Forever—This song sounds as if it could have come straight off a movie soundtrack. It is definitely a ‘movie-ish’ song about a person who has lost a loved one.  They are telling the dead person that one day, they will join them in Heaven.  And I believe that there is Somewhere / Where the angels fill the sky / And I believe we’ll live forever / you and I / we’ll never die.
  4. Hang On—This one is an admonition to ‘hang on’, even when the going is tough. Even when people are making fun or worse, we are to hold on, knowing that God has planned something much better for us in the future.
  5. Fly to the Moon—A song from a parent who is watching a child leave home. In the song, Michael tells the recipient to dream and carry out those dreams, to fly to the moon and not be afraid.  He tells the child that he is cheering them on and hopes that he has taught them well enough.
  6. Human Spark—a slightly sadder song about how through the night, we will cling to the things that we know to be true about God; His grace, mercy, etc. There’s a river of sorrow / running through my heart / through the long night / I will follow / the glimmer in the dark / Lord You are the human spark.
  7. We Can’t Wait Any Longer—This song is a song of desperation as Michael cries out to God that he doesn’t feel like he can wait any longer for God to free us and make us new. We can’t wait any longer / they’re crying out / doesn’t it matter? / we can’t wait any longer / no, no / too long in a slumber / shake it up / wake it up now / we can’t wait any longer / no, no.
  8. I Am Love—A song from God’s heart to ours, telling us that we can run as far as we like, we cannot run far enough from Him. He will find us, no matter where we are.  A beautiful reminder of His love for us.
  9. Bridge Over Troubled Waters—Originally sung by Simon and Garfunkel on their fifth studio album Bridge Over Troubled Waters, this is a cover of the famous song.  I personally prefer Michael’s version.
  10. Eagle’s Fly—I have always loved the idea of flying. I’ve always dreamed of flying like an eagle.  This song is a song about flying like an eagle, God giving the ability to soar…wow, what an awesome thought!
  11. All I Want—My favorite song on the album. It is the one really vertical worship song on Healing Rain.  It is also one of the shortest, but every second of it is worth listening to.  It is simply a song about how he just wants to be with God.  To love Him is Michael’s—and my—greatest desire.

  1. My favorite is totally “All I Want”… “All I have in this world is fire from above / All I have in this world is you / And all the journeys I have walked / I know you’ve walk them too / All I want is to be faithful / All I want is You”. Gets me every time!
